Background:

Founded in 1954, West View Primary is situated in North Hartlepool. The school is located on the edge of a large council estate and serves an area of 'significant social disadvantage'. It is a split site with 'large, enclosed' playing fields. The school won an Education Extra Certificate of Distinction in 1999-2000 and is also a Comenius European exchange school. West View Primary is in an area designated as an Education Action Zone (EAZ). In 1999, the pupils were local orienteering champions and the school also became the town football leagure champions in 2000. 'Strong' links have been developed with community organisations. French is taught as an after-school activity. The school's special educational needs (SEN) co-ordinator works closely with other agencies to provide support to SEN pupils.
